Oven cleaning

Oven cleaning across the Wirral.

Most of the visible grime in an oven is on two surfaces: the inner door glass and the enamel floor. Both are reachable once the door is split and the shelves and side racks come out, which is the difference between a cleaned oven and a wiped one.

What's included

  • Shelves, side racks and grill pan removed and soaked
  • Door split and inner glass cleaned where the model allows
  • Enamel cavity, roof, floor and fan cover
  • Hob and extractor if included in the booking
  • Everything refitted and the oven checked before we leave
  • Floor and worktop protected while we work

What is involved

How the oven comes apart.

Everything removable is taken out and soaked while the cavity is worked on, so nothing is being scrubbed dry.

01

Shelves, racks and trays

Wire shelves, side racks and any grill pan come out and go into a heated tank or a soak tray. Soaking is what loosens carbon; scrubbing a dry shelf mostly polishes it.

02

The door and its glass

Where the model allows the door to be split safely, the inner panes come apart and the faces between them are cleaned. Some doors are sealed or bonded and cannot be split, and we do not force one that is not designed for it.

03

The cavity and the seal

Enamel sides, roof and floor, the fan cover, and around the door seal without soaking it. Pyrolytic liners are treated differently, because the coating they rely on is damaged by the products used on plain enamel.

Appliance by appliance

What each type takes, and what it will not take.

Oven cleaning is decided by what comes apart. A door that splits and racks that lift out is a straightforward job; a sealed unit is a different one.

ApplianceWhat comes outDoorTypical timeWatch for
Single oven Shelves, side racks, grill pan Usually splits Around two hours Door seal not soaked
Double oven Both cavities, all shelves and racks Both doors, where they split Two and a half to three hours Top cavity often the worse one
Range cooker Multiple cavities, racks, grill trays Several doors Three to four hours Cast iron parts need drying immediately
Pyrolytic liner Shelves and racks only As the model allows Around two hours Cavity treated differently, coating is damaged by normal products
Hob and extractor Pan supports, caps, grease filters Not applicable Forty minutes to an hour Filters soaked, not wiped

On the day

How an oven clean actually runs.

  1. Check the model first

Whether the door splits, whether the liner is pyrolytic and whether anything is already broken. All three change the method, and the last one changes who is responsible for it.

  2. Protect the floor and worktop

Sheeting down in front of the oven and a space cleared beside it, because parts need somewhere to stand and drain.

  3. Strip and soak

Shelves, side racks and grill pan out and into the tank or tray. Soaking is what lifts carbon; scrubbing a dry shelf mostly polishes it.

  4. Cavity and glass

Enamel sides, roof, floor and fan cover, then the door glass, including the faces between the panes where the door comes apart.

  5. Rebuild and test

Everything dried and refitted, door reassembled, and the oven switched on briefly to check it works before we leave.

Why the door comes apart

Most of what you can see is on a pane you cannot reach.

An oven door is two or three panes of glass with a gap between them. Grease vapour gets between the panes through the vents at the top and settles on the inner faces, which is why a door can look brown and streaked when the surface you can actually wipe is already clean.

Where the manufacturer designed the door to come apart, those inner faces can be cleaned and the difference is the whole job. Where a door is bonded or sealed, it cannot, and forcing one that was not designed for it is how glass gets broken and hinges get bent. We check which yours is before we start, and we tell you if it is the second kind.

Pyrolytic ovens are the other thing worth knowing. They have a coating designed to burn residue off at high temperature, and the caustic products used on ordinary enamel damage that coating. Those cavities get a different treatment, which is slower and gets less dramatic results, and that is the correct outcome rather than a worse one.

Good questions

Oven cleaning questions.

An oven clean is often booked alongside something larger, either a deep clean of the whole kitchen or a property being handed back. Regular domestic cleaning, Deep cleaning, End of tenancy cleaning.

How long does an oven clean take?

A single oven is usually around two hours, a double two and a half to three, a range up to four. The oven has to be cold, so it should not have been used for several hours beforehand.

Do you take the oven away?

No. Everything is done in your kitchen. The removable parts go into a soak tray or heated tank that we bring, and they never leave the property.

Will the door glass come completely clear?

Where the door splits, usually yes. Where it is sealed, we can only reach the outer faces, and anything between the panes stays. We tell you which yours is before starting rather than after.

Is it safe around a pyrolytic liner?

Yes, because we treat it differently. The self clean coating is damaged by the products used on ordinary enamel, so those cavities get a gentler method. The result is less dramatic and that is the right answer for that appliance.

Will my kitchen smell of chemicals?

It should not by the time we leave. The products used in the tank are not the caustic fumes people remember, and the cavity is rinsed and dried rather than left wet. Open a window for an hour if you would rather.

Can you do the hob and extractor too?

Yes, and it is worth doing at the same time. Pan supports and burner caps go into the same soak, and extractor grease filters come out and soak rather than being wiped, which does almost nothing.

What if something is already broken?

We check before we start and tell you what we find, whether that is a cracked pane, a failed seal or a hinge that has dropped. It is recorded before any work happens so there is no argument about when it happened.

Do you clean AGA or Rayburn cookers?

Not the cast iron cooking surfaces of a heat storage cooker. They are a specialist job with their own method, and a general oven clean is the wrong tool. We would rather say so than have a go.
